What a week! We started the week off with fun activities revolved around the Solar Eclipse. We even got to watch live feed of the eclipse, and the kids loved it! They were clapping and cheering! On Tuesday we dove into the curriculum. We are learning a lot and enjoying it! We have a smart group of kiddos. Homework: I am sending home the first homework packet today! It will include review of what we are doing in math and some reading. As the kids get used to the homework, more subjects will be added. Again, homework is meant to be a review. The homework is due next Friday, September 1st. Please let me know if you have any questions! Volunteers: I have had a couple parents ask me about volunteering. I will be honest I am not used to having such supportive parents and it is truly amazing, so thank you! I am still trying to put together what I need so please stay tuned for a sign up! I always have our wish list on my website as well if you can donate to that, it is greatly appreciated. Notes from Mr. Meeks, music teacher K-2: This week we have been learning about rhythm and pitch. We have learned about quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. We have also begun to sing using the solfege method, which will help the students be able to sing anything from sight instead of having to listen to it over and over again. We will be starting to learn the recorder starting in October, so keep an eye out for recorder forms to come home very soon. Songs listened to in class: Daft Punk “Harder Better Faster Stronger”; Louis Armstrong “Jeepers, Creepers”; Louis Armstron Here is a peek at next week! Reading: We will continue to read Trouble at the Sandbox. We are talking about the character's point-of-views and how we are able to identify them in the story. We also are looking at sequence of events and listing events in chronological order. Writing: We will start to write our own narratives. We will start off with our setting and how we can engage all five senses in our descriptions for the readers. Math: We will continue to look at fluently adding and subtracting within 20. We have been working a lot with addition and next week we will do more subtraction. Science: We are continuing to look at living things, and this week looking more at animals. We will take a look at the different animal groups, how they grow and change, as well as how they survive and live. Social Studies: We will be talking about the state we live in, Florida! We will take a look at maps to see what Florida looks like and the different kinds of land forms that make it up. We will also talk about our state capital and other cities in Florida. A few reminders - -Please bring a filled water bottle. -I would suggest having your kids bring a Plato approved sweater or jacket, it tends to get a little chilly in our room! -If you are not buying a school lunch please bring a full lunch. Everyone should also bring a snack for our Morning Snack. -Remember your placards for dismissal, we are not able to release your child without them. If you do not have it, please come in and show ID to Ms. Riley so we can release your child to you. -Please remember to bring your V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N.folders every day. 8/18/2017 0 Comments Successful First Week!Happy Friday 2nd Grade Families!
Our first week has flown by! I have enjoyed getting to know all your kiddos, they are the best group. It will really be a great year. This week we really focused on understanding our classroom rules and expectations. The group is doing so well with this, and are ready to start learning next week! Monday is the Solar Eclipse and we will be spending the day learning all about eclipses! We will watch the live coverage provided by NASA to ensure safety for the children. If you are planning on taking your child out of school early on this day or even keeping them home to witness the eclipse with you, that is fine and will be excused if you provide me with a note. Thank you! Here is a peek at next week! Reading: We will be looking at characters and the role they play in a story! We will discuss the different types of point of view and identify the character's point of views from the book we are starting called Trouble at the Sandbox. Writing: We will take what we are learning about the characters in the story and begin a narrative about the main character's interactions with the other characters. Math: We will begin by reviewing addition and subtraction, specifically within 20. Using manipulative and hands on activities we will solve the different equations. Science: We are looking at living things, specifically plants and how they are alike and different. Using real life examples we will observe and investigate these differences and similarities. Social Studies: We will be discussing what a republic is and talk about what it means to be a citizen. Taking The Pledge of Allegiance we will take words from it such as indivisible and liberty to analyze and discuss what the means.
