I am so grateful for all of you! I love all your kiddos and I feel so lucky to be their teacher. Thank you for entrusting me to help them grow, and for your continued support! I hope you all have a very safe and happy holiday! We will see you all when students return on January, 9th. There is no formal homework over the break. Please continue to work on reading and ask your kiddos those comprehension questions listed below :) Character Counts Monthly, students will learn about a new character trait. At the end of each month, one student from each classroom, whose behavior exemplifies the Character Trait of the Month, will be awarded a certificate and invited to the Character Breakfast with Mrs. Perez! It is Plato Academy’s expectation that as we continue to emphasize positive character traits we will only continue to improve. This week in music is the first week we have not been preparing for the holiday program, which was an outstanding success. The students enjoyed their version of The Grinch, and performed very well. Reading: In reading we will be looking at texts and how we can identify the main topics. We will use strategies such as using the text features, and asking questions along the way to help us with our understanding and comprehension. Reading Comprehension Questions -How is this story like any other story you know? -How is the setting (time and place) important to the story? -What words did the author use to describe the place? -Who is the most important character? -How does the author tell us about the character? -Which character changed int he story? How did he/she change? Writing: We have been working on how to look at our work and grade ourselves based on our "5 Star" rubric. We will continue to work on being better writers and self correcting our work. Math: We will be starting a new topic, where we will be subtracting fluently within 100. We will use the strategies we have learned thus far to be fluent in our subtracting. Science: We will be taking a look at how we use energy on a daily basis. We will be looking at heat, sound, and light. Social Studies: Happy New Year!! We will be taking a look at New Years and how people around the world bring in the New Year. A few reminders - -Please bring a filled water bottle. -I would suggest having your kids bring a Plato approved sweater or jacket, it tends to get a little chilly in our room! -If you are not buying a school lunch please bring a full lunch. Everyone should also bring a snack for our Morning Snack. -Remember your placards for dismissal, we are not able to release your child without them. Your kiddos totally ROCKED their Holiday performance! I am such a sucker for these kids, I was tearing up as they performed. I am so proud of them! Thank you for coming to support them, they loved it :) Next week is going to be a FUN week! It is the last week before the winter break. We will be spending the week working hard, but having fun! Everything will be holiday themed, I cannot wait! It is also SPIRIT WEEK! Please see the schedule below for Spirit week. It is going to be a blast! Spirit Week Monday, December 18th- Crazy Hair Day Tuesday, December 19th- Sports Day Wednesday, December 20th- Wacky Socks Day Thursday, December 21st- Ugly Sweater Day Friday, December 22nd- Polar Express PJ Day 1st Annual Holiday Shop The students will have an opportunity to shop in our 1st Annual Holiday Shop during school hours on Tuesday, December 19th. The children will choose from a variety of items to use as holiday gifts for their loved ones. When they are done shopping, we will wrap the items for them so they will be a surprise. Payment for the store is CASH ONLY. This will be super fun for them, we cannot wait! Holiday Party I would like to invite you to the Holden Classroom Holiday Party on Thursday, December 21st from 12:15 PM -1:30 PM. Hello parents, we are all extremely excited about the winter program this Friday! I would like to thank all the students for all the hard work they have done in preparation for this event. Also, if your child does not have a recorder as of now, please make arrangements to purchase one for them. Starting in the new year, recorder participation will have an affect on their grade in music. Recorders can still be ordered and purchased simply by sending a short note with your child's name on it and enclosing $5 in cash. Can you believe we are already two weeks away from Winter Break? I told you it would come quick :) We have a lot of fun things coming up, but we also have a lot of work to do. I am looking forward to the events ahead! We WILL be having a Christmas party in the classroom. Please be on the lookout for the email invitation :) Christmas Parade Tomorrow! Please join us tomorrow, December 9, 2017 for the Annual Tarpon Springs Christmas Parade! We will join Plato Academy Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor for this annual event, which is sure to be a wonderful time! We hope to see you there! What: Annual Tarpon Springs Christmas Parade When: December 9, 2017 - Meet at 9:00am (Parade begins @ 10:00am.) Wear your Festive Gear and meet in the parking lot of the old Winn Dixie located in Manatee Plaza by 9:00am There will be a float that will be decorated and we will have at least one Plato Bus. All of our Plato Academy families march behind the float and our kiddos are either on the float, on the bus and some kids walk behind with their parents too! Parents, if you would like to bring along a stroller during the march/parade, please feel free to do so. For our information ~ Marchers are not allowed, per county ordinance, to throw candy, but we are allowed to hand them out so those marching will pass out the mini candy canes that have been donated. Math: We are learning all the different ways we can subtract within 100. They are very similar to all the different strategies we learned to ADD within 100. We will be finishing up this week and taking a test on Friday! Science: We will continue to look at force and motion. We will be taking a look at different things that use these forces such as simple machines and magnets. Social Studies: We spent a lot of time discussing immigrants and their journey to America. We will now start to take a look at how these immigrants impacted the lives of the American Indians. We are also working on refining our technique on the recorder. Kindergarten is doing better at covering the holes more completely to avoid squeaking. First grade is working hard to learn our the notes G, A, B and learning songs using them. Second grade is learning notes using both hands, while third grade is working on more complicated songs using those notes. Please allow your child time to practice each day, and try to remind them to bring their recorders to school on the day that they have music class. How did he/she change? Writing: We will be starting to work on writing more than one paragraph. We will start with a short two paragraph narrative. Math: We just took our test on adding fluently within 100. Now we will be transitioning to subtraction! We will take a look at the different strategies we can use to subtract within 100. Science: We take a quiz on what we have learned about matter. We will then be starting to talk about how things move. We will talk about motion and forces and what kinds of forces we see every day. Social Studies: We took a look at the changes in America made from more settlers coming to America. We will this week take a look at how these changes impacted the American Indian populations over time.
