I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your constant support! I feel so blessed to have such amazing families who are all so dedicated to making their child's success a priority. I adore your kiddos, and will do everything I can to make them successful. So again, thank you! You really are rock stars! LearnBoost I want to do better with my communication, especially with grades. I will be using a new program called LearnBoost. I will use it to manage the classroom and would love to keep you in the loop! Once you register you will be able to view your child's grades, track attendance, contact me (in another way), and much more! The 100th day of school is coming up. I would like to invite 2nd grade to wear a shirt that day with 100 items on it! For those who would like to participate, have your child make a shirt with 100 things on it. Maybe these are bugs, or unicorns, or googly eyes :) Get creative! Valentine's Day Valentine's Day is quickly approaching! Please keep an eye out for information on our Valentine's Day Card exchange and party. :) Character Counts Monthly, students will learn about a new character trait. At the end of each month, one student from each classroom, whose behavior exemplifies the Character Trait of the Month, will be awarded a certificate and invited to the Character Breakfast with Mrs. Perez! It is Plato Academy’s expectation that as we continue to emphasize positive character traits we will only continue to improve. January's character trait is Self-Motivation: Working in a careful and consistent manner without giving up. Mrs. Holden's Classroom Expectations 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Be respectful. 3. Be honest. 4. Stay on task. 5. Listen to ALL directions. 6. Do the right thing (even if no one is watching). 7. It is all about recorders this week at Plato Academy! We have been learning new notes in the younger grades, and working on improvising with the older children. Parents, please make sure that your young one brings their recorder on the day that they have music class. It will have an effect on their music grade if they do not have their recorder. If your child does not own a recorder, please contact me or send $5 cash with your child to purchase one. Reading: We finished our story on Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. We will be looking at different poems and texts with similar topics and comparing them to the biography we just read. Writing: We have been working on subjects and predicates and really focusing on how to make our sentences make sense. I will be giving them a mid-year check in with their writing to see how they have improved since the beginning of the year. It will help my instruction going forward as we focus on writing. Math: We will be starting a new topic that will focus on solving problems involving addition and subtraction. I am excited to work with them on this! Science: We will be talking about animals in different parts of the world. We will this week look the desert environments. Social Studies: With President's Day approaching next month, we will be looking at the first presidents of our country as well as how and why our government was formed. A few reminders - -Please bring a filled water bottle. -I would suggest having your kids bring a Plato approved sweater or jacket, it tends to get a little chilly in our room! -If you are not buying a school lunch please bring a full lunch. Everyone should also bring a snack for our Morning Snack. -Remember your placards for dismissal, we are not able to release your child without them. If you do not have it, please come in and show ID to Ms. Riley so we can release your child to you. -Please remember to bring your V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N.folders every day. Can you believe we are almost done with January? We have one full week left in the month and what a week it is! January 22-26 The Florida Department of Education presents the 10th Annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! We will be focusing on literacy and doing a lot of fun activities around reading. We will be having a reading night on Thursday, January 25th here at the school. Information below! Let's Do S'more Reading Night Let's Do S'more Reading Night is just around the corner and we just cannot wait! We are in need of volunteers to assist us with setup and cleanup. We also need to borrow 3 tents, 5 coolers, 6 lanterns, 10 beach chairs, & 10 flash lights. This week in music class we have been working hard on improving our recorder technique. Students have been learning new notes and have been playing with better tone and control. We have also been working with the solfege to improve our singing, and many children are getting more command of their voices and maintaining pitch. We have also been using the percussion instruments to refine our sense of rhythm and reinforcing our knowledge of the rhythm values of notes in standard notation. This week in music we have been revisiting the solfege syllables for sight singing. This will help our children learn new music much quicker and establish a sense of pitch. Recorders will be an important part of your child’s grade in music this semester, so please make sure your student brings his/hers to music class each day they have music. We will continue to work on being better writers and self correcting our work. Math: We will be starting a new topic, where we will be subtracting fluently within 100. We will use the strategies we have learned thus far to be fluent in our subtracting. Science: We will be finishing up our discussion on how we use energy on a daily basis. We will review and then take a chapter test on what we learned.
