The Living Bio Museum projects look AMAZING! I am so excited to see their presentations. I can tell they all worked really hard on them, and I am so proud! Next week we will be having a Dr. Seuss Themed week in honor of his birthday on March 2. Oh the places we will go! March School Store We are now accepting March's School Store money. Participation is voluntary and the amount your child's can spend is completely up to you! For your child to participate, please send in the money by March 2nd. *Please note that we cannot accept cash from your child on the day of the school store. We can only accept pre-purchased Giant Bucks. Volunteers - we need your help! The 2017-2018 Yearbook will be about 50 pages in length and the cost is $35, which INCLUDES your child’s name, personalized on the bottom right hand corner of the Yearbook. We encourage parents and business owners to advertise in our book. Parents can either purchase a LOVELINE DEDICATION (50 words or less, including spaces; no picture) or BUSINESS advertisements as well. We are hopeful that advertising in our Plato yearbook will help to grow your business by keeping it in the family. Please know all yearbook orders, the yearbook dedications and/or the business advertisements are due back by Friday, February 23, 2018 to the front office. Character Counts Monthly, students will learn about a new character trait. At the end of each month, one student from each classroom, whose behavior exemplifies the Character Trait of the Month, will be awarded a certificate and invited to the Character Breakfast with Mrs. Perez! It is Plato Academy’s expectation that as we continue to emphasize positive character traits we will only continue to improve. This week in the music class we have been working on learning songs for spring, improving our recorder skills, and learning new notes for our singing. First grade has increased their notes from 4 up to 5, and are learning a song from Jungle Book. Second grade have been working on improving their note reading on recorder and learning notes on the music staff. Kindergarten are continuing to work on getting better tone control and volume control with the recorder. Third grade is working on a song to play on recorder for the spring, and increasing their notes in singing. Third grade is also learning notes in regular notation on the music staff. Reading: We have just finished the Change Makers book in class. We will continue to discuss how to pick out the main topic of the text. After discussion and review we will take a quiz on the book on Thursday. Writing: We have been talking about writing and what it is we need to be good authors. We have started our writing and next week will work on editing. Math: We will review and reassess Topic 7 as discussed. We will also continue our new topic discussions on working with money. Science: We will be talking about our Earth's surface and look at rocks, minerals, soil and plants. We will explore the composition and structure of the surface of the Earth. Social Studies: As President's Day is approaching, we will continue to look at the first presidents of our country. We have now learned about the first 15 presidents! A few reminders - -Please bring a filled water bottle. -I would suggest having your kids bring a Plato approved sweater or jacket, it tends to get a little chilly in our room! -If you are not buying a school lunch please bring a full lunch. Everyone should also bring a snack for our Morning Snack. -Remember your placards for dismissal, we are not able to release your child without them. If you do not have it, please come in and show ID to Ms. Riley so we can release your child to you. -Please remember to bring your V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N.folders every day. Next Thursday is our field trip! Please remember to send in the bus permission slips if you have not already. Plan for a normal lunch that day as we will be back in time for lunch. We are looking forward to it! Living Bio Museum We will be creating a living museum of historical figures as a project. Each student will research an individual who made a great accomplishment in history and write a biographical summary of their life events and accomplishments. They will also creatively design a bio poster board display/costume including props for a classroom presentation and the Living Bio Museum. Packets are going home today and they will be due on February 23rd. I am excited about this project! Students have been continuing to improve their ability to sing on pitch as well as learning to hear notes and figure out which pitch is being played. January came and went and we are now in the month of February! Time is flying by, and I can't believe we are closer to being 3rd graders. I will continue to push your kiddos to be ready for the next level. I appreciate your constant support! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me about any questions or concerns. I will use it to manage the classroom and would love to keep you in the loop! This week in music we have been learning new notes on recorder with the younger ones and working on playing in groups. We have also been working on rhythm and learning the letter names for each note on the music staff. Our singing is getting much better, and 3rd graders are up to 5 notes in the solfege singing. Parents, please make sure your child has a recorder. We play every week in music class, and if they do not have a recorder it affects their grade. I ordered more recorders this Wednesday, so please feel free to send the $5 in cash to purchase your child’s recorder if they need one. Reading: We finished our story on Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. We will be looking at different poems and texts with similar topics and comparing them to the biography we just read. Be on the look out for a fun biography project next week! Writing: We have been working on subjects and predicates and really focusing on how to make our sentences make sense. We will continue to work on this as we form sentences to form paragraphs. The students really enjoy the song we have learned to help us understand subjects and predicates.:) Math: We will continue to work on our topic that will focus on solving problems involving addition and subtraction. I will focus on 2-step problems with them, to help them understand how to pull the correct information from word problems to solve. Science: We will be talking about animals in different parts of the world. We will this week look the ocean environments. Social Studies: With President's Day approaching, we continue to look at the first presidents of our country as well as how and why our government was formed. We have talked about the first four presidents so far!
